Rock face with sea
I created this a watercolour painting with fluid, sweeping brushstrokes capturing the mood of a dramatic coastal scene off Silverdale Cove. The sea dominates the lower portion of the composition, its waves blending seamlessly into each other with shades of deep blue, with strokes of pastel to emphasis the water meeting the base of the towering cliffs. The rock face rises sharply from the sea, its jagged edges and textured surfaces rendered in earthy tones of burnt sienna, red, gray, and ochre.
Above, an atmospheric sky looms—swirls of muted pinks and soft lilac hinting at an impending storm. I wanted the brushstrokes here to be more loose and expressive, evoking the drama and mood of nature's raw power. The overall effect, I feel is captivating, with a balance of light and shadow that draws the viewer into this elemental, untamed landscape.
