Oil on Canvas
Size (without frame) 120 cm x 90cm
I created this oil painting after an autumn trek up Scafell Pike in the Lake District, beginning with a loose watercolor sketch drawn right on the mountainside. Back in my studio, I translated that on-site study into oil, allowing the memory of wind-tossed clouds and shifting light to guide each brushstroke.
My aim was to push the summit upward into the sky, so I layered a rich, deep red across the rocky face and contrasted it with a luminous yellow crown that pierces the overcast. The day I climbed, mist curled around me at the peak, and I’ve tried to capture that moment of walking through cloud—an interplay of earth and air, weight and suspension. I’m delighted with how the final piece balances bold colour with the mountain’s ethereal presence.
